wuweishan's art work

On December 4th, I went to Nanjing University. Before I visit, we have already known this artist, Wu Wei Shan by watching some videos about him in art class. After Chinese class, I went to there with my classmates. In there, there were many fabulous sculptures made by Wu Wei Shan. At the beginning, we listened to curator’s speech carefully about sculptures outside of the building. After that, we went into a big building. In there, I saw many artworks and I found the sleeping baby which is very famous. Except the sleeping baby, I also found many interesting sculptures that attract me. This is one of them. This sculpture’s name is Shen Yun white stone (??) (It is very hard for me to translate it. I need to translate it into Korean first, and then I translate it into English. So it may be wrong). As I said, it is sculpture. This work is made by one artist called Wu Wei Shan. The curator told me that it is both contemporary and traditional. It is just in middle. But I do not know why it is in middle. Curator did not tell me the reason. I guess that this artwork looks like an old man with contemporary Chinese old men’s face, but the color and clothes look like as traditional. And I think that’s why it is in middle.

The title of this artwork is shen yun white stone (??). In 1998, this artwork was made by Wu Wei Shan. It is to describe culture of Sino centrism. This artwork is all made by Wu Wei Shan in bronze. The color of this artwork is brown just as color of normal bronze. The sculpture is like an old man and he has very mysterious expression. He also takes a waling stick (There are two sculptures that they are same but one of them is a big head and the other is a whole body. Artist used many kinds of lines and shapes in different parts of sculpture. This artwork made me feel very surprised because it looks very weird and it has a mysterious expression. He looks very sad. But when I was watching carefully about this artwork, I saw that it also look little angry. I think about an old man who lived next to my house when I was in Korea few years ago. He did not have any family members and he looked very sad every times I saw him. I think the artist’s intention is to represent a life of old man. Actually, what I chose is a head of sculpture (I said before). I think the artist also wanted to say a sad old man in china. I like this artwork. As I mentioned many times in several tests and this essay, I like mysterious things whatever it is sculpture or stories etc. Maybe others do not think it is mysterious, but I think it’s marvelous. Also, the sculpture looks very sad just like real human feel sad. It represented sadness of an old man very well. So I think it is a very successful artwork and it is one of the best artworks that I have seen before. I think many people can do not agree with my opinion (It’s mysterious and marvelous), but I am sure they must like this artwork. This artwork really has strong and weird impression about normal people. It shows us the not only old man’s life but also normal people’s life just like us in China. This is an artwork of the people, by the people, for the people. In conclusion, I think it was a good experience to me. I learned much new knowledge about art (especially Chinese sculpture) and it made me be interested in artworks. If I have a chance, I really want to go there again and visit more museums or art galleries.
