Volunteer work
As I wrote, I did volunteer work at the police office last time in Korea. I cleaned the police office and it was quiet easy because the police office was not very dirty. Though I could volunteer other works, I chose the option that is cleaning the police office because it is simple and do not need high ability. So this time, I also wanted to clean the office which is my father’s. Few weeks ago, I was finding the volunteer work because it seems easy but actually, it is difficult. At that time, my father told me that cleaner in his company stopped to work because of her personal reasons and he was finding the cleaner. So I told him that I wanted to clean the offices as a volunteer work. He agreed with me and I decided to work in Saturday because there are no people in Saturday in his company.The location of the company was quiet far from my house. It is located near the Nanjing Lukou international airport. The offices were very larger than I thought. At first, in April 4, I worked in his company for about 4 hours. It was very simple work though it was hard. I cleaned and mopped and did all about cleaning things. After 7 days, in April 11, I also went to his company with my father. My brother only cleaned 4 hours because he finished his other volunteer time by going to primary school to teach. I also went there but I could only teach them 1 hour so this time, I did volunteer works for about 5 hours. And other 1 hour is for working in primary school.I think cleaning is very simple and easy and I do not write it as long as before. So this time, the teaching in primary school is main subject. I learned a lot from this volunteer works. This is my little essay from that experience:
Just few days ago, I went to one of the elementary schools in Nanjing, China with my classmates and teachers. At first, I was little nervous because I had have not any experiences of teaching. But after I arrived at school, I did not feel nervous anymore. We taught students from grade 5 which is the class of Mr. Ma’s son (my Mandarin teacher). After Ms. Bartell (Planning teacher) chose a boy from children, I began to teach something which I have studied in planning class. I forgot to ask his name at first but after few minutes, I found questions in paper and asked him in English. His name was Jim. And then, Jim and I started to play a card game called Uno. I taught him how to play and what the different cards represent. He was a very good card player and I lost many times. Then, Jim and I started to play with Shirley’s group and Bill’s group. It was very interesting and I found that card games are very amazing even than computer games. Actually, when I was in middle school, I went to a very poor primary school in countryside with my classmates to teach students as I did few days ago and from these two experiences, I learnt a lot. If I have another chance to teach children, I will go.
It did not require any difficulties for me. I think teacher only needs to have confidence with teaching and a skill that can attract students’ attention. One of my dream jobs is to be a teacher. After I did this, I realized that it is very suitable to me and I think I can teach students very well. It was very good to my employability for my future life.

Project Runway and America's Next Top Model

I think I did greatest job in art class about fashion show. In April 7, 2009, the fashion show was held by students’ council and Ms. Hadley. Before the fashion show, every student groups had to design their outfits and make them. It was quiet easy for me to design the clothes because I like to see a famous American reality TV program called ‘Project Runway’. So I designed school uniform in GCA and finally my design was chosen by my group members.
As I said, the fashion show was held in April 7. It was held at the NFLS courtyard where the Halloween dance was held. The reason I was chosen as a model of my group is very funny that my group members and I played a game called ‘scissors-rock kerchief’ (I do not know if it is right translation or wrong) and I lost.
Before the fashion show starts, models had meeting at lunch and 3 o’clock. We practiced walking in runway and how to pose. I was not nervous so much because I also like to see a famous American TV reality program called ‘America’s Next Top Model’. I knew the life and feeling as a model. But I am a person and I could not be so confident. Actually, it was not difficult. But some of my classmates were in front of me. So I had to walk. I think it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. I do not want to be a model when I grow up and I think this was the last chance to experience model and fashion show.

Buddhism

I was a Christian. Now, I do not have any religions. This time, I chose Buddhism and went to a Buddhist temple called ‘Jiming temple’. I did not want to change my religion (I still believe god) but the reason I chose Buddhism is that I wanted to experience many religions. I thought I know the Christian religion and Catholicism very well because I was in Christian middle school and my brother; Martin was in Catholic middle school in Korea.
In April 29, I went there with my mother and brother. Jiming temple is located in Beijing east road and I chose this place because it is very near from my house. But the main reason why I chose this religion is that I wanted to experience different religions. I went there at about 11 a.m.
At first, we bought the tickets to go into the temple. I thought the temple was very small when I saw that in outside but actually, it was really big. After we went into the temple, we got three incenses in free charge. After that, we climbed and climbed. And finally, we got the place which make incenses burn and do religious things with incenses. Then, we saw many people throw the coins in to an iron statue. They believe that if the coin is thrown into the statue, they will be happy and lucky everyday. But it is not easy and I also failed though I threw coins several times. After that, Martin and I wanted to interview a Buddhist monk. We tried to find monks and finally we found. But one person who is a spokesperson of monks stopped us because he was doing devotions. So we asked spokesperson several questions and one of the most important questions from them is the differences between the Chinese Buddhism and foreign Buddhism. She told us that there are many differences like the appearance of Buddhist statue and images if Buddha. There are many differences between India Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism. And also, she told us that the way of worship is also little different.
I think it was great experience. I like it because I realized that there are many differences between many different Buddhism in different countries. It was interesting because I understood that there are also differences between Korea and China though they are very near. I hope I will visit other religious temple like Islam etc if I have chance.

VITAS Concert

In 2009-05-02, I went to a concert with my brother. The name of title was ‘Prince of the voice of dolphin, VITAS 2009 Nanjing Concert’. I attended at 7:30. Before I went this concert, I did not know the person ‘Vitas’ very well. I heard that his voice was fantastic. And that’s why I chose this performance. The concert was held in Nanjing Olympic Center Stadium and the time that started was 7:30.
To say something about VITAS, he is Russian. He has high voice like dolphin. I heard that he is very famous in China as DFXQ.
At first, He came up with band and then they introduced themselves. After that, I was surprised because of his voice. Before I went this concert, I did not realize that his voice is very high and I did not look the brochure carefully (it is written in Chinese and I did not want to read it). This is the reason why I was so surprised. His clothes were super amazing and splendid. After his first singing, he came out with white normal (more normal than before) clothes and greeted to us in Chinese. And then, he sang a religious song and a Chinese song. And after that, he sang and sang in same high voice with perfect performances in same way. He performed with his band, Chinese singing group and dancers.
The performance was really great. But I do not like it because I do not like this high voice like Chinese opera and the quality of this concert was not pretty high, I think. It was interesting but boring to me. It means the events and concert was interesting but the performance with Vitas’s high voice was boring to me. Though he is Russian, his performances were not traditional. So I could not feel cultural things in his concert. But I think I was developed that now, I know how to go concert. And I think I can more understand every concert very well.

Teaching experience

Just few days ago, I went to one of the elementary schools in Nanjing, China with my classmates and teachers. At first, I was little nervous because I had have not any experiences of teaching. Japanese restaurant with family

Japanese restaurant

In 2009-03-13, I went to a Japanese restaurant called Tairyo Japanese restaurant with my family. I really want to go Japanese restaurant for a long time because I had not eaten Japanese food except sushi though I am Korean and I am in China. After I watched a famous TV program at 7 pm, I went to 1912, which is very famous place that there are many international restaurants and clubs, because it is very near my home (only takes 5minutes to go). The exact location is 52 Taiping Bei Lu, Nanjing.

Now, I have eaten 3 different kinds of East Asia foods (Korean, Japanese and Chinese). I was very surprised that though these 3 countries are very near, foods are very different. Korean food is spicy and salty. And Chinese food is too fatty for me because there are so many fat and oil in the foods. And last, Japanese food is not salty and not spicy and not fatty. In there, I ate sushi, steak, sashimi, noodle and so on. Actually I did not eat so much because the dish was too small. But I liked it because I really like foods like sushi and sashimi without cooking. As I wrote, I am Korean and I am in China so that I eat spicy, salty and fatty food every day but the food I ate was not salty and spicy and fatty.

In addition, the environment was very clean and great. Actually, there are Korean restaurant in 1912 but I do not recommend going there because that Korean restaurant is very dirty. And I think that is not like Korean restaurant. I was also surprised because two thirds of people in this restaurant were foreigners. Moreover, the service was very good except the food is very late.

In conclusion, I recommend others to go Tairyo Japanese restaurant if you have enough money. It was expensive and the food is not so much. If others really want to go, I recommend choosing 150 yuan food. If you pay 150 RMB, you can choose whatever you want. I think I will go there soon because I can not dismiss those foods.

Palace museum art gallery [no tickets or brochures]

In 2009-3-13, I went to an art gallery called ‘Nanjing art gallery’ with my brother, Martin. At first, actually, we would go other art gallery called ‘JiangSu Yanghofan Art gallery’ because it is very near from my house and I am very interested in canvas. But when I arrived at there at about 12 o’clock, I found that the building was broken. So I had to change my plan. I began to look for other art gallery and in I decided to go here. The open time was 9~11 am and 14~17 pm. So I went there at 2 o’clock. It was quiet near from my house (BaiXia district Sitiaogang number 12). The title is Palace museum duplicate painting and calligraphy.

When I reached there, I found that there are a lot of traditional pictures and calligraphies. I heard that these pictures were painted by many artists from hundreds years ago and these pictures are not real one. But the prices of pictures were still expensive. I liked some pictures of views because as you can see, it is really eastern. I like eastern pictures. But some of them are pictures of human and I did not like it because it looked like Japanese style and it was little scary (It doesn’t mean I hate Japanese people so much). I also liked pictures of animals such as birds and horses.

As a consequence, I liked it except pictures of human. I was very excited because I had very few chances to visit art galleries. I hardly ever go to art gallery and it became very good experience for me. As you know, I am Asian (though I am not Chinese). So I felt comfortable when I was looking pictures and that’s why I do not think that I was developed by looking these pictures. But I learnt a lot by looking these pictures. Nowadays, I think many people like Western style pictures. I also like it. But I think we can go to Eastern art gallery or museum to relax ourselves.

my phsical activity

When I arrived at my country, I had to prepare so many things which are something about portfolio that made me terrible. I prepared for physical activity during the volunteer work. My trainer was one of my cousins. Though she is not an expert on training people, but she graduated from the special high school (it is about physical educational school). We went to her school and did exercises and we started our exercises from Monday and finished at Friday. We practiced 2 hours per day.
At the first day, she taught my brother and me how to stretch myself. She told us that it is the first step of all exercises and it is very important. If we do not stretch ourselves, we can get injuries during the exercises. After spending 5 minutes doing stretching, we began to run on the running machine. We run almost 40 minutes. After that, we did other exercises with different kinds of athletic apparatuses.
At the second day, we did almost same as first day. It was hard to run for approximately 40 minutes. After that, as you can see in the picture, my cousin told me how to use these sports goods. She told us that when you start to do some exercises, you must use your arms slowly. In exercise, safety is the most important. She was just looked like as a professional trainer. We spent 2 hours and it was much difficult to practice than the day before because the day before, we spent only 1 hours.
At the third day, everything was same as Monday’s and Tuesday’s. We spent 2 hours doing these exercises.
At the forth day, she took us to climb mountain together. The mountain is located in my hometown and it is very near from my house. So I have been this mountain for many times when I was a little child. At first, it was difficult because I had not climbed the mountains for a long time. Moreover, we climbed the mountains for almost 3 hours. So it made me harder. But after that, it was much easier to climb. It was a very good experience because as you know, it is very difficult to breathe clean oxygen in city nowadays.
At the fifth day, my cousin taught me everything which she taught us before. We spent 2 hours doing this exercises and it was much easier than the first day and the second day.
I think during this time, I have learned a lot. Now, I know how to exercise by myself. It was a very good experience in my life and it increased my knowledge about physical activities. I can also teach others that everybody can be healthier and healthier. If someone look through reports in my blog, someone will know that I really like soccer (soccer was mentioned in club activity). So it was very good to me because now I know how to run in good way. I can also do these exercises in China so that maybe I can get good score in Physical education class. It helped me a lot.

Other 10 hours

I am in China and that's why I could not do the same physical activity. So Martin and I decided to play badminton and sometimes play soccer. My mother was the coach and she checked our activity.

Volunteer work -police office

Several days ago, I arrived at my country, Korea. In fact, I decided to do volunteer work to take care of pets. But I had to come to Korea and I had to find some volunteer work. I thought that it would be difficult. But my brother and I did not have to spend so much time finding volunteer work. My mother helped me to find something to do and she told me that her friend’s younger brother is police officer. And then, after few days, we went to a police office to help them to clean, mop or arrange some papers. My brother and I have worked there for 5 hours per days. We did volunteer work for 2 days. The location of this police office is Kwang-ju, my hometown. It is near from the railway station.
At first day of volunteer, we went to police office which my mother told us before. It was quite difficult to find because there were so many buildings that we could hardly find the location. We left home at about 12 o’clock. But we reached at 1 o’clock. After arriving, I was little surprised because the building was quiet large. In there, a police officer came to us and asked us the reasons that why we came to there. We told him that we wanted to volunteer to help them. And also, I found my mother’s brother. When he found us, he made us to do mopping and cleaning. He told us where the dustbin, mops and dustpans are. At first, we thought it was not difficult. But it was difficult. As I mentioned before, the building was quite big and our works are never done. After 5 hours, we finished our work and went to home.
At second day, we also reached the police office at 1 o’clock. Police officer let us clean and mop the building again. But the day before, my brother and I did a lot and we finished the work very quickly. After cleaning, we helped them to arrange some papers and files. Of course, it was not so important files and papers. When we finished our works, it was almost 6 o’clock. We got the log and verifications after our works and after that, we could go home.
I think I learned a lot in there. I knew that the volunteer things are very important and good. Now I understand why so many people want to help others. At first, I just worked for my volunteer time (10 hours). But after work, my heart was full. About insights what I gained, I still do not understand what it means. But after this work, I knew that I am a good cleaner and I am enjoying helping people.
During my work, I needed some cleaning skills. It was very easy and actually, I think even child can do my work. But as I said, the building was big and it was hard.
In conclusion, it was very meaningful to both my brother and I and if I have a chance, I will volunteer again.
